Rule 1 — Keep the Guard On, No Exceptions

The tubular PTO shaft guard fully encloses the spinning shaft and both universal joints. Check it before every use: it must be intact, free to rotate, and there must be no cracks, missing bearings or broken caps. Never operate a shaft with a damaged or missing guard "just for this one job" — that one job is exactly when a glove or sleeve finds the spinning coupler. If a guard is worn, replace it before hooking up.

Rule 2 — Dress for the Shaft, Not for the Field Image

Loose clothing is the #1 PTO entanglement cause. Tuck in your shirt, remove hoodie drawstrings, don't wear scarves, ties, capes or loose jackets, and secure long hair under a tight cap. Rule 3 — Disconnect the PTO & Shut the Engine Before Any Contact

Before hooking up, unhooking, clearing a wrap, adjusting, lubricating, or servicing any part of the implement: disengage the PTO, put the tractor in park, lower the implement, set the park brake and switch off the engine. Wait for all rotation to stop completely. A shaft that looks stopped can still be spinning down — and inertia at 540 rpm takes seconds. Never reach into the implement area with the engine running.

Rule 4 — Stay Off the Rotating Area and Keep Bystanders Back

Kneeling, leaning over, or straddling a rotating PTO shaft to reach an implement is a classic amputation move. Never step over a turning shaft — always walk around. Establish a clear safety radius: keep helpers, children and bystanders well away from the tractor and the implement, and never allow riders on the fender or tractor.

Rule 5 — Shut Down Before Everyone, Every Signal Exchange

When a helper signals, points at the implement, or needs to approach, stop the PTO immediately. Field communication often lags behind motion. Make it a hard rule: nobody approaches the tractor or implement until the PTO is disengaged and the engine is off. Never start the PTO until every person is clear and you can see the full length of the shaft.

Rule 6 — Match the Shaft to the Implement Correctly

The PTO shaft has two halves that telescope together; when hooking up make sure the sliding section engages correctly and the shear bolt or slip clutch is the correct-rated one. Using the wrong shear bolt defeats the safety clutch and can throw the driveline or damage the implement under a sudden jam. Rule 7 — Use a Master Shield and Cover the Tractor Spline

When the implement is detached, use the PTO master shield that swings over the tractor's splined PTO stub.
